Esmeralda

Name: Esmeralda
Gender: Girl
Meaning: emerald
Origin: Spanish
Rank: #392
My Opinion: Esmeralda is my #1 GP name, like ever. I just love it so so so much, especially with the nickname Esme :D It reminds me of "The Hunch Back of Notre Dame" and I love the song she sings "God Help the Outcasts" in the Disney movie.

How Many Children? BNG

Happy Wednesday Everyone!! I know it's been a little while since y'all have heard from me, for some reason the alerts in my phone aren't working (I really gotta figure that out). But anywhoo, here's a quicky little baby name game. Use this dice (http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks1/maths/dice/six.htm) to determine how many kids you will have, and what their genders are (even boys, odd girls)

Child 1:
Boy: First name should be inspired by one of your favorite celebrities, middle name should be one syllable.
Girl: First name should be inspired by nature, while the middle name should be 2 syllables.

Child 2:
Boy: First name is a unisex name that is more dominantly used on girls, and the middle should be a name of a current or former European monarch
Girl: First name should be a unisex name that is more dominantly used on boy, and the middle should be long and princess-y

Child 3:
Boy: The first name starts with the letter, A, B or C. The middle name should start with X, Y or Z.
Girl: The first name is a name that is more commonly used as a nickname (i.e. Ellie). Middle name isn't in the US 2013 top 1000

Child 4:
Boy: The first name has a bad meaning, while the middle name ends in a y
Girl: The first name has a good meaning, while the middle name end in an H

Child 5:
Boy: The first name is 3+ syllables, and the middle as an M somewhere in it.
Girl: The first name is 1 syllable, and the middle name has an O somewhere in it.

Child 6:
Boy: First name is the name of a famous musician, and the middle name has some connection to TV
Girl: First name has a connection to water, and the middle name is in the top 100 for the US in 2012

Hope y'all had fun playing!

Old Hollywood Names!

Because this week's theme is celebrity names, I decided that my post should be a Throwback Thursday type of post (it is Thursday after all), and talk about Golden Era/Old Hollywood star names! It's going to be more girl heavy than boy heavy though, sorry, I like more of the girls names.

 Audrey

I could not make this list without talking about the gorgeous, talented, amazing Audrey Hepburn. She was just an amazing woman who gave up a career in Hollywood to become a UNICEF ambassador. Ms. Hepburn also has an AMAZING name, one that happens to be in my top 5. I find Audrey in general one of the most classy names out there, and the connection to Audrey Hepburn  sure doesn't hurt.

 Greta
Scream Queen Greta Garbo is another Hollywood power-house with a wonderful name. I find the name Greta a beautiful, underused named that deserves more attention. Greta could also be a nickname for the beautiful Margaret, although I prefer it on it's own.

Ava
Ava is a name that in the past ten years has shot to super-stardom in the United States, and I can clearly understand why. The Old-Hollywood connection to the beautiful Ava Gardner really does help this name. This name is so short and sweet, and I can truly see it on any type of girl, of any age.

Harlow
Taking a bit of a different path with this name, the surname path. While Jean Harlow's first name has not come back into style, her last name sure is catching one. It appeals to so many different people, those who like surnames, those who like unisex names, and those who like Old-Hollywood names.

 Ingrid
The gorgeous Ingrid Bergman has not seemed to have helped her names in this Old-Hollywood name boom, and I don't quite understand why. I find Ingrid SO cool, and I would love to meet a little Ingrid sometime soon. I feel like this name could get a little more popular in the next few years because of Ingrid Michealson.
 Gregory
Can we all just swoon for a moment? Gregory Peck is one of the most attractive men I have ever seen, and my goodness, he helps me like his name. I was never a fan of Gregory until I first saw To Kill a Mockingbird which he plays Atticus in (this also admittedly started my obsession with Old Hollywood movies started). I'm not sure I would ever use Gregory because I despise the nickname Greg.

Cary

Let's all just swoon again, aren't these Old-Hollywood guys SO hot! I love the name Cary purely because of Cary Grant. I totally think it's time for more boys to be named Cary, and I think there is hope, with the name Carrie for girls becoming more and more dated.

Gable
And we will end with a surname for the boys. Clark Gable was a wonderful actor, and he also has a great first name, though I see his surname becoming a big standout in future years. It would be an awesome alternative to Gabriel if people want something less common than Gabriel, and it could appeal to people wanting an Old-Hollywood connection in a name. (Can I please please please meet a brother and sister set of Gable and Ingrid? I would die.)

Name of the Week: William

Gender: Male
Meaning: Resolute Protection
Origin: German
Rank: #5
Sibling Names: Luke, James, Oliver, Theodore, Hannah, Olivia, Audrey, Violet
My Opinion: I LOVE the name William! It has been my top name for over a year, and I seriously cannot see myself not using it! I find it so handsome and strong, the nicknames Will (what I would use) and Liam are also adorable.

Your Opinion: Leave it in the comments!

Grace's New Favorite Names!

So this week I’m going to do what I usually think is a big no-no: talk about my favorite names. I did this back in January, and since then my names have changed a little bit…and honestly will probably change again as soon as I post this but I think having insight into the naming styles of the people whose blog you are reading is important, and my style never changes, just the names! I’m just going to talk about my top 5 for each gender and pray that it doesn’t get too long. I get a little too ramble-y sometimes, lol.

William Craig- William has been my top name since about March 2013, and I don’t see it going anywhere any time soon. To me William is just a very handsome and strong name. I really think that William can suit any person, of any age, in any profession and to me this makes a great name. Craig, like all of my middle names, is an honoring name. Craig was my mom’s brother’s name who died when he was 9 years old, so I never met him. If I had been a boy, either my first or middle name would have been Craig. I think because my mom never had a son it would make her really happy if I used the middle name Craig. (If you recognize this explanation, it’s because it’s the same as last time)

Theodore Pierce- Theodore is a name that is always on and off my list. I seriously adore the charm of it, and how sophisticated it sounds. I would personally use the nicknames Teddy and Ted, for two different reasons. I love the idea of calling him “Teddy Bear” when he’s little, and I’m a total nerd and love TED Talks (if you don’t know what those are, you haven’t lived) I don’t LOVE the nickname Ollie, but I don’t think many people would use it if I didn’t. Pierce is a diminutive of my dad’s name, Peter.

Jonas Alexander- Jonas is an interesting name for me, and I used to really dislike it. Recently I reread the book The Giver (if you read my last blog post you would know this), and I just fell in LOVE with the name Jonas (which is the main character’s name). The Giver is just an awesomely dark book, and it is probably one of my favorites. Also, Jonas is a diminutive of John, which is an important name for me for many different reasons. Alexander is the male form of my sister Allie’s name, and I really want to honor her. She is one of my favorite people, and one of the most important people in my life.

Elliot Durstan- Elliot is the name of one of the boys I’ve been working with in Special Olympics, and I just adore him, and his name. It’s always one and off my list, but finally meeting an Elliot helped solidify it as a name I could see myself using. Durstan is my grandpa’s name J

Quinn Phillip- There’s this little boy with Down syndrome whose mom writes a blog (some of you might remember him, he was called ugly and his mom wrote an awesome letter to the haters), and he is just so awesome and cute he made me love his name. Quinn is also just short and sweet to me. Phillip is my other grandpa’s name, and while I don’t think the flow is 100% good, I can’t use his middle name :P (It’s Adolph…)

Hannah Ruth- Hannah is just such a sweet name to me! It’s simple, cute and classic. I also think it just sounds awesome with the middle name Ruth. Ruth is my granny’s name, and I’ve always wanted to use her name as a middle name for one of my children. My middle name is my maternal great-grandma’s name, so I think it would be fun to have my daughter have her middle name be her maternal great-grandma’s name.

Audrey Karoline- Audrey is a name that I have always had a bit of a soft spot for. I find it very classy and beautiful; the Audrey Hepburn connection doesn’t hurt either. Karoline with a K looks very weird to most people and most people don’t like it, but I have my reasons for using it. My mom’s name is Karen, I don’t like Karen, but I do like Caroline, so to honor my mom, I switched the C to a K and made Caroline Karoline!

Sophie Alexandra- So, The Da Vinci Code might be one of my favorite books ever, and I think that in a way is where my love of Sophie (the name of the main female character) comes from. I also love just the sound of Sophie. It sounds sweet and young, but can also be grown up. Alexandra is again for my sister Allie J (If I had a Jonas Alexander, I wouldn’t reuse Alexandra, though that would mean I had six kids, which is terrifying)

Maia Hope- Maia, Maia, Maia. A name that is always on and off my list, and usually, every other time has a different spelling. I like the Maya spelling too, but Maia just seems perfect to me. I love the I in the middle J Maia is so classy and gorgeous to me as well. The name Hope means a lot to me, it isn’t exactly honoring though. Hope to me is the greatest emotion, as hope is the only thing that can conquer fear, and as someone who has had trouble with anxiety, hope is really important to me.

Juliet Rachel- Juliet is a name that I think is just absolutely adorable. I love how feminine and cute it is while still sounding really strong. I can picture a Juliet on any type of girl. Rachel is an interesting honoring name for me. It less honors a person, and more honors and experience. I did the Camino di Santiago between my junior and senior years of high school, and it was truly a life changing experience that thought me so much about myself. One of the people who took my group along the trail was named Rachel, so that’s where this name comes from for me.

Have a great few weeks guys, xoxo

Frozen Names!

I know that the world is now obsessed with the movie Frozen, so I thought I would continue the movie theme I’ve kinda got going this week and talk about the main names in the movie!!

Elsa- I just simply adore this name. It’s so cute and spunky J I met the most adorable Elsa in the store like 2 years ago, and she just made me LOVE it! I also love the character in Frozen, let’s be honest, ‘Let it Go’ is one of my jams.

Anna (AH-nuh)- I adore this pronunciation and this name! I think it’s just simply adorable. Also, it’s a palindrome, which I think is very fun. Also, ‘Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?” that’s one of my other jams.

Kristoff- This is one that I’m a little iffy on. I’m not really ever a fan of K names or names with a prominent F sound :P Also, I would like Christophe more.

Olaf- This name is just kind of silly to me. I don’t think it really could work on a baby in the English speaking world right now.

Hans- Though he may be evil, his name is pretty awesome.

The Great and Powerful Mary

Happy Thursday Everyone! I’m so sorry that I missed two Thursdays ago. Life got in the way, and I completely forgot and I feel awful about it. This week I’m going to talk about variations on the ultimate super name: Mary.

I’ll start off with two of the most obvious variations. Marie and Molly. Marie is the lovely French version of Mary that is starting to fall from favor as a first name. Marie is a super name in her own right, but instead of as a first name, as a middle. I personally love Marie, I think it’s beautiful, and love how unexpected it is as a first name because of how often it’s been used a middle (though I love it for a middle too). Molly is an off shoot of Mary. Molly started off as a nickname for Mary but can now stand alone. I really like Molly, but as it’s my sister’s name, I cannot ever use it.

Two other diminutives are Mara and Miriam. I think these two are a little less obvious than Marie and Molly, but they still have a connection. Mara is a beautiful name that has never been very common in the United States. I only know one, and she’s a lovely person, so that association makes me like this name a lot. Miriam is a name that I find absolutely adorable. I love the nicknames Mimi and Miri J. Miriam as never been very popular here, but I still think it sounds so classic and lovely.

The last two names that I’m going to talk about I think are the least obvious variants; Moira and Malia. Moira isn’t exactly my style, but I think it’s an awesome way to maybe honour a Mary in an unconventional way. Just like Mara and Miriam, this name has never been common in the US, although unlike the other two, it’s more unheard of as well. Moira also reminds me of Peter Pan as it’s one of Wendy’s middle names. Malia then has been thrust into the lime light because of President Obama’s daughter. There are many spelling variations of Malia but I think this most simple one is the best.

So what are your favorite variations of Mary? Or do you like just Mary best?

Place Names!

Happy Thursday Everyone! Hope you all are having a great week, and if you live in a cold place that you are staying warmJ. This week I’m going to talk about some of my favorite place names!! (In parentheses will be where the place is). Also, there are only girls names on this list, I’m not really into place names for boys.

Vienna (Austria) - I’ve been seriously crushing on the name Vienna lately! I just think it is so gorgeous. It’s girly, and flowing, and Vienna is a beautiful city so it has that nice connection.

Charlotte (North Carolina, USA) – This is a name that I have always always loved. Charlotte is so old-fashioned and sophisticated while still being cute. It also has the really cute nicknames of Charlie and Lottie.

Geneva (Switzerland) – I’ve always thought that the name Geneva was so beautiful and uncommon. I had a teacher in middle school named Geneva and always thought it was really cool. I also love the possibility of the nickname Eva J

Georgia (Country/US State) – Georgia is another gorgeous old-fashioned name. I think it just flows off the tounge, and I love the image of a sweet southern belle. Also, I love the nickname Georgie.

Florence (Italy)- Again, just an old-fashioned sweet name J I love the city of Florence and the image that this name creates in the mind.

Grace's Favorite Names

This week I am going to do something that I really never do; I’m going to talk about my personal top names. The reason that I don’t talk about them too often is that they change a lot, at least the girl’s names, and I’m always nervous that I’m going to talk about them, and then want to change them right after it gets posted. I've decided to take the leap today because these have been my top names for a little while, and they seem like they are going to stick around for a while (though they can always change ten seconds after this is posted). I’m only going to talk about my top 3 combos for each gender because I tend to ramble (example: this opening) and if I talk about all 5 of my combos then we will be here until my next post.

I think I am going to start with the gentlemen for a change, and because they are more constant.

Jackson Alexander- Jackson is such an adorable handsome name, and I've just been loving it lately. It’s really cool to me, and I just love the nickname Jacks. I would use the nickname Will with William, and the nicknames Will and Jacks are just so cute together to me J. ! Alexander is a take on my older sister Alexandra’s name. Allie is one of my favorite people in the world, and she has always been there for me.

Henry John- This is a name that has always been on and off of my lists, and now it is solidly sitting at number 3. Henry to me is just classy and wonderful and no matter how popular it gets I will always love it (clearly with William and Jackson as my top names, I don’t give a crap about popularity). John is a name that has a lot of significance to me. John is the name of a swim coach who always believed in me, the name of a boy with autism who taught me how even if someone is different they are still important, that in a way I can speak a different language and led me to find a passion for helping, and Jon is my dad’s middle name.

And now the ladies…

Evelyn Ruth- I was going through my closet and I found this old weird folder on one of my shelves and decided to go through it. Turns out it was a bunch of old stuff of my moms, like pictures and letters, and even her baptismal record; on this record was my grandma’s full name, which turned out to be Ruth Evelyn. I’ve always been planning on honoring my granny my using her first name Ruth as a middle name, but then I heard this combo. I was so ecstatic because the combo Evelyn Ruth is perfect to me. I adore the name Evelyn because it’s sweet and old fashioned and I can picture it on someone of any age. Also, these names together have an awesome meaning with Evelyn meaning “wished for child” and Ruth meaning “friend, companion”.

Charlotte Alexandra- Charlotte is another name that has been on and off of my list. I think the main reason that before now it never stuck is because my sister “claimed” it but really can somebody claim a name before a baby is conceived/born? I don’t think so. Charlotte may be popular but I don’t think that diminishes how lovely and classic it is. Alexandra is again to honor my wonderful sister J

Nora May- Nora is a short and sweet name that I have always loved. I remember in 7th grade that I wanted to name my daughter Norah Catherine. Now, I don’t like the H spelling as much as the without an H spelling; I like how streamlined Nora looks. May is to honor my mom, who was born in the month of May. I decided to use May instead of her name, because I REALLY dislike her name (it’s Karen).

So those are them, my top names William, Jackson, Henry, Evelyn, Charlotte and Nora J

Why The Popular Names Are Popular

I was going to announce the winners of my baby name game from December 31st at the beginning of this blog but not enough people played L so everyone who played is a winner, thanks for all of your suggestions, and for playing! Maybe next time we will get more of a turnout if I do another client game!

This week for my third and last post in my popular baby name series I’m going to talk about the top ten in the United States for 2012. “What makes these names popular?” is the main question I’m going to try to answer because I think that we all have that question, though, I might not be able to answer it for all of the names because there are some that even I don’t understand J Feel free to disagree with anything I say, these are just my opinions and thoughts.

Sophia- The lovely Sophia, I adore this name, but can’t use it (I have a cousin with this name). I think that this name is popular because of wide spread appeal, it appeals so parents looking for a name that has strength, parents who want a child to have a name with a good meaning (wisdom is pretty awesome), modern parents, and old fashioned parents. This name covers all the bases.

Emma- Many people think that Emma became popular because of Friends but that is not the case, it was already rising when Rachel stole this lovely name from Monica; though I’m sure that Friends did help it rise faster. The main reason I think Emma became popular was because it was an alternative to megastar Emily.

Isabella- This is another name that people think became popular because of a popculture phenomenon (Twilight) but Isabella was already number 1 when the first movie came out and in the top 20 when the first book did. I think Isabella was the starter to the trend of long and frilly names for girls, with cute little nicknames. This name gives parents options, a long a flowy name or a short spunky nickname (Izzy or Bella).

Olivia- Olivia has been a rising star since the 90s, and I just love this one. Olivia along with Isabella is part of the long and filly girls name trend. I think it appeals to parents because it’s long and strong, but there is also the adorable nicknames of Liv and Livi

Ava- Ava is like a counter to Olivia and Isabella. While Ava is still girly and beautiful, it’s not long and frilly, it’s simplistic, short and sweet. It has the same appeal as Olivia with the funky V sound in the middle but is much shorter, and has no nicknames.

Emily- Emily was a dominate power for YEARS, until Isabella dethroned it. I think the appeal of Emily is the old-fashioned charm, while still sounding modern. Emily is just a pretty name, it’s not harsh at all, and just sounds sweet.

Abigail- I think that Abigail has the same appeal as Emily, although some might find the B sound kind of harsh. Abigail has old fashioned appeal, while still staying a little bit modern with the lovely nickname Abby.

Mia- Mia, like Ava, is a counter to the long and frilly names that are becoming more and more popular. Mia, even though it’s popular, is like a breath of fresh air to all the long a girlie names that are getting more popular. I think that Mia has universally appealing sounds (feel free to disagree but that’s my opinion), and it’s just a cute little name.

Madison- Honestly, this name doesn’t appeal to me, but obviously it appeals to a lot of other parents. I think it might be the nickname Maddie, but I’m not sure.

Elizabeth- I ADORE the name Elizabeth, and clearly so do other parents. I think the appeal comes from the fact that it is a classic name that will never go out of style. If you hear the name Elizabeth, you don’t link it to a certain decade or area in time, which I’m sure appeals to a lot of parents.

Jacob- Jacob is a name that seems like it has been popular for forever (and it kind of has) so obviously it appeals to a lot of parents. Jacob is just a friendly name to me, you can use the adorable nickname Jake or the full Jacob and have the same ‘boy next door’ appeal.

Mason- I think Mason got a huge boost from the Kardashians, though it was already rising. No one would use this name BECAUSE of the Kardashians, but having heard it more and more means that parents were thinking of it more. This name is an occupational name without being too obvious, and I think parents like this. It’s also is a nice alternative to Jason.

Ethan- Ethan has been popular for a while too. Clearly boy’s names stick around for longer, and I think that’s because they have more overall appeal. There are a few famous people and characters named Ethan, so I think that helped it out. It’s also a softer sounding name, still strong, but not in your face masculine.

Noah- This lovely, Old Testament name is just becoming popular again. Like Ethan, it has a softer sound, while still being masculine, and I think that parents really like that in a name. It is also a nice name for parents who are looking for a biblical name but don’t want something like David or Joseph

William- This is my number one boy’s name, so obviously I see the appeal. I find William as a strong, classic, masculine name. It has the sweet nickname possibility of Will, which I find adorable. I like that William has been used for years, and will never go out of style.

Liam- Liam originated as a nickname for William but is now a standalone name. Liam is another softer but masculine name for boys. I think Liam is very very handsome, and reminds me of the great Liam Neeson. The only thing about Liam is that I don’t think it has staying power like a lot of the other names on this list.

Jayden- I don’t even know…

Michael- Michael has been popular for YEARS; it appeals to many people, in many different walks of life. I feel like Michael might still be popular because of honoring purposes (whether baby is named after Dad or Grandpa Mike) because it sounds a little bit dated to me, but is still a lovely classic choice.

Alexander- This name is similar to William to me. It’s strong and classic, with lots of nickname possibilities. There’s the friendly Alex, the modern Xander, and the cool Lex. Alexander has royal appeal (as does William), and brings to mind some of the great leaders of the past.

Aiden- Aiden is one of the leaders in the –aiden trend that I don’t quite understand. I’m a lover of popular names, but to me, even though I love the sound of Aiden, it’s just around too much for me now with all the different names that are in use now a days.

Why to use a Popular Name!

Happy Thursday Everyone! I’m back again with my popular name series (this is number 2, go check out number one, which was posted on December 12). This time I’m going to talk about reasons to possibly use a popular name, if you’re unsure about popularity and naming! Let’s get started!

1. Most will be able to spell it.
I say most, because there is always going to be that one person who misspells a name that should be obvious to spell (like my name, it’s a word, but it got spelled wrong at Starbucks one time). BUT most people will be able to spell Emma or William, but not a lot of people are going to be able to spell Lachlan or Sarai, which can be a huge hassle.

2. Most will be able to pronounce it.
Again, I say most, because there are those weirdos out there who don’t know how to pronounce the most common of names. I firmly believe in the pronoucability (ß is that a word) of names. Pronunciation changes a name, it makes it a different name, and so if you use a name that gets pronounced wrong, then isn’t your child being called by a different name? Little story for you: I have a friend, her name is Annika (prn. AWN-eh-kuh), but for some reason everyone pronounces it (uh-NEE-kuh) and she hates it SO much!

3. It won’t become popular
You know that feeling that “this name is going to take off” feeling? Well, if you use popular name, there is no fear in all of a sudden it becoming popular, because it already is. There will be no celebrity who all of a sudden comes on the scene and makes the name popular. You won’t think your being unique for the name to all of a sudden rise 500 places to number 50, which has been known to happen.

4. Celebrity associations won’t be as strong
There’s only one Miley, there’s only one Cee Lo, but Elizabeth? Justin? Nobody would ever say when you used those that you were naming your child after a celebrity (even if you are). And if that celebrity happens to go the wrong way, then there will be no backlash, as compared to a Miley who was named five years ago.

5. Naming a child is a game of chance
Who says that your Olivia will be one of 5 in her grade? Who says you’re the only one in your neighborhood with the idea to name your child Lachlan? I know 1 Ava and 1 Olivia, I also know 4 Brennas. I know 1 Luke but 2 Lucas (I don’t live in a heavily Italian area).

6. Less people are being named the top names now
At one point, every 1 in 4 girls was named Jennifer, now nothing is even close to being that popular. If you look at the number one girls name right now for 2012 (Sophia) it was given to 1.15% of all baby girls born, that’s about 22,000 babies, and in the grand scheme of things, that’s not too many. Especially compared to the 7.23% of babies named Mary in 1880. People are using the popular names less and less now, so the actual chances of your child being “one in five” is a very small chance!

7. They will be “one in five” for a small part of their life

Once you leave school, the chances of you being called First Name Last Initial go downhill fast. I haven’t been called Grace H. in YEARS and I actually am one in five Graces in my grade. You are only in school for a little part of your life, so is it really worth it to give your child a hard to spell, hard to pronounce name just so they can be different for those 13-17 years?

Client Game #1

This is going to be my first “client” game! Here are the rules: you may put in 5 answers per client, if the question asks for a set then you must answer in a set (ex. Naming twins give me 5 sets of twin names), and finally have fun!!! I will announce the winners before my post on January 16th J

Client Number 1: This couple already has two daughters named Phoebe and Juliet and just found out they are having a 3rd! They have no idea where to start, give them some suggestions.

Client Number 2: It’s going to be a full house of boys for this couple, they already have Arlo, Porter, and Barrett, and just found out they are having a fourth. They don’t care about popularity, and don’t want any of the names to sound too similar, suggest some boys names!

Client Number 3: This couple is playing one team green for their first baby! For girls they like long flowy princessy names for first names, and for boys they like strong, masculine ones for first names. They also don’t want anything too popular, so keep it out of the top 500. The middle name should be short and sweet. What would you name their first child?

Client Number 4: No matter what this couple does, they cannot agree on names. His favorites are Avery, Brooklyn and Ella, her’s are Rosalina, Penelope, and Juliette, help them find some middle ground for their first daughter. They are also stuck on middle names, so give them complete combos.

Client Number 5: This couple already has two daughter Audrey Victoria and Anna Olivia and just found out that they are having a boy! Should they continue the A trend or pick a different letter for their first son, you choose! For his middle, something long to match his sisters!

Popular Name Series #1

Hello Everyone! I thought I would start a little bit of a series for my blog posts. I really tend to need a lot of inspiration, so I think maybe working with a theme would help meJ. I decided, as a popular name lover, I would work around the theme of popular names. I’m going to start out with the things I hate hearing about popularity of names.

1. Using a popular name is lazy.
I have never understood this comment, and I've heard it multiple times. I understand that there are a lot of different names out there, and maybe using the number 5 name isn't that creative, but how is it lazy? I feel like people assume that because I’m using a popular name, I just looked at the top ten and decided which one I liked the most, that couldn't be farther from the truth though. If anyone knows me, they know that I extensively look at names, and research them. I’m sure there are some people that just look at the top name and decide to use that name, but not most! I don’t understand why people assume that the person who used Lachlan spent more time looking for names than the person (me) who wants to use William.

2. I’m using a unique name so my kid will be unique.
This is another one that makes no sense to me; how does a unique name make a person unique? I know the most creative person named Emily (the most popular name of her birth year) and a wallflower named Esme (which was unheard of when she was born). A unique name might make your child stand out at first, but once their true personality shines through, the name really won’t matter.

3. I don’t want my kid to be one of five [fill in popular names here] in their class.
At Jennifer’s peak, for every four girls born, one was named Jennifer; fortunately we don’t live in that time. In 2012 only 72.85% of all babies born had names represented in the top 1000 (66.82% for girls, and 78.62% for boys) and it’s decreasing every single year. Less and less babies are getting the top baby names, so the chances of your child being one in five is slim, and honestly, was anybody scarred for life by having one other person in their class with their name, I don’t think so.

4. People have been named Elizabeth/James/other classics for centuries it’s time to mix it up.
There is a reason this names have been used for so long, they are awesome! There won’t be preconceived notions about an Elizabeth coming in or a James, like there would be a Cosima or Thornton. People use classic names because that is what they are: classic. They make a timeless choice, that won’t tie your child to one decade, like many creative names would.

So these are the top 4 things that people say about popular things that bother me the most! If you are another popular name lover, what do people say that bugs you? If you are a unique name lover, do you agree with any of the points that bug me most? Why do you agree?

Names of '95

Happy American Thanksgiving Everyone! Somehow I have gotten both of the fall holidays to blog on, but today I’m not going to do a Thanksgiving theme list. I know what you are all thinking which is Whaaaaaa? But you know all the Thanksgiving theme name lists have been done to death, and you all could Google some nice Thanksgiving names if that’s what you want. Instead I’m going to relate this blog to what I think should be considered a national holiday coming up on Saturday the 30th: My Birthday. On Saturday I’ll be a legal adult, and I am so excited to celebrate. So to commemorate my birthday I thought I would talk about the names that were popular the year I was born. And apparently, 1995 was the year before the dominants’ (Emily and Jacob) took over, I wonder what made those get to the top in 1996 and stay there for so long…..questions, questions. Now one with the lists starting with the ladies!

Jessica
Rank in 1995: 1
Rank in 2012: 138
Meaning: wealthy
Origin: Hebrew
My Thoughts: I used to want Jessica to be my name SO badly! I have no idea why, lol, I think I might have just loved the nickname Jess. Jessica might have been the number 1 name in the year I was born, but there is only 1 in my grade, and I only know 4 in total.

Ashley
Rank in 1995: 2
Rank in 2012: 50
Meaning: dweller near the ash tree meadow
Origin: English
My Thoughts: I actually kind of like the name Ashley. I just read a book with the main character named Ashley, and I really loved her character so now I’m liking the name Ashley. The nickname ‘Ash’ is cute too J

Emily
Rank in 1995: 3
Rank in 2012: 6
Meaning: rival
Origin: English
My Thoughts: I adore the name Emily! It’s such a cute, sweet, and feminine name. I don’t care that Emily is so common, it’s just beautiful. Emily has a certain sophistication to it, and I could really picture Emily on any woman, of any age!

Samantha
Rank in 1995: 4
Rank in 2012: 26
Meaning: told by God
Origin: Hebrew
My Thoughts: I go back and forth on whether I like the name Samantha or not. I really like the nickname Sam, but something about Samantha is a little bit off.

Sarah
Rank in 1995: 5
Rank in 2012: 43
Meaning: princess
Origin: Hebrew
My Thoughts: Sarah is another adorable name. I think it’s super sweet and cute. I could see Sarah on someone of any age or race.

Michael
Rank in 1995: 1
Rank in 2012: 8
Meaning: who is like God?
Origin: Hebrew
My Thoughts: Michael is so very common, it takes away some of the handsomeness for me. I struggle to see the name Michael on a little boy, even though I know that it’s still popular.

Matthew
Rank in 1995: 2
Rank in 2012: 12
Meaning: gift of God
Origin: Hebrew
My Thoughts: I love the name Matthew. I know I just said that Michael was common, and so is Matthew, but there is something different about Matthew. It has never been the number one name and is now out of the top ten. The nickname Matt is also pretty cute!

Christopher
Rank in 1995: 3
Rank in 2012: 23
Meaning: bearer of Christ
Origin: Greek
My Thoughts: I hate the name Christopher. I cannot stand it, really. To me, there is nothing appealing about it. I do love the name Christian though, which is strange.

Jacob
Rank in 1995: 4
Rank in 2012: 1
Meaning: Supplanter
Origin: Hebrew
My Thoughts: I love the name Jacob too. I just keep contradicting myself about the commonness of Michael taking away some of the handsomeness; maybe it’s just Michael. I think Jacob is so absolutely adorable, and I love the nickname Jake.

Joshua
Rank in 1995: 5
Rank in 2012: 17
Meaning: the Lord is my salvation
Origin: Hebrew
My Thoughts: Joshua is just an eh name to me. I don’t love it, I don’t hate it, it’s just kind of there. It’s not a bad name or anything, it just does nothing for me.

So the name that has dropped the farthest is Jessica, who is the only one out of the top 50. Most of the boys names are still hanging on in the top 20, though Joshua seems to be fading fast. Most of the names seem to be Hebrew in origin, and really, right now comparing to the 2012 statistics, not that much has changed since 1995 J Happy Thanksgiving Americans! And Happy Thursday Everyone Else!
