4 Letter Names

Hi Ladies :)

Lately I've really been digging any name that has 4 letters. I just find them really cute and they look complete to me for some reason. Today I am going to share my top 5 favourite girls and boys names that are 4 letters long. So lets get started :)

Girls

#1 - Kaia
~Derived from the Hawaiian name Kai.
~I just recently started LOVING this name. It is currently my #1 top name for a girl.

#2 - Ella
~Currently #12 on the SSA Charts.
~This was the very first name I remember loving. It has been on my list for at least 14 years.

#3 - Mila
~Pronounced MEE-La.
~I think most of you know how obsessed I have been with this name. I LOVE it!

#4 - Sage
~Can be used for both boy and girl.
~I've always loved this name as a middle name but as of late I've been digging it as a first name. I think its really cool sounding.

#5 - Avia
~Any Shaytards fans out there? This is the name of their eldest daughter!
~I also just recently started liking this name. I am considering adding it to my top 5.

Boys

#1 - Cash
~Currently #270 on the SSA Charts.
~This was my top boys name for the longest time but then 3 people I know all named their son Cash/Kash and I was not down for that.

#2 - Cruz
~It's a Spanish/Portuguese name meaning: Cross.
~I had this as a brother to Cash on my list BUT then my neighbour at 2 boys and named them Cash and Cruz. UGH.

#3 - Cade
~Not short for Caden.
~I guess you could say I like "C" names. I think Cade is super cool and I still think about using it sometimes but I'm not sure I would like it years from now.

#4 - Kane
~Irish and Gaelic origin.
~I mean, is this not such a cool name? I think its so badass. I could picture myself with a son named Kane and he be such a tough hockey player.

#5 - Luke
~Currently #37 on the SSA Charts.
~I love the simplicity of this name. I think it works for a baby, toddler, preteen, teen, adult. Its just an average name and I think its super cute.

What are your favourite names that are 4 letters long?
What do you think of the names that I have listed above?

Until next time,
Jaylyn ♥

Grace's Favorite Names

This week I am going to do something that I really never do; I’m going to talk about my personal top names. The reason that I don’t talk about them too often is that they change a lot, at least the girl’s names, and I’m always nervous that I’m going to talk about them, and then want to change them right after it gets posted. I've decided to take the leap today because these have been my top names for a little while, and they seem like they are going to stick around for a while (though they can always change ten seconds after this is posted). I’m only going to talk about my top 3 combos for each gender because I tend to ramble (example: this opening) and if I talk about all 5 of my combos then we will be here until my next post.

I think I am going to start with the gentlemen for a change, and because they are more constant.

William Craig- William has been my top name since about March 2013, and I don’t see it going anywhere any time soon. To me William is just a very handsome and strong name. I really think that William can suit any person, of any age, in any profession and to me this makes a great name. Craig, like all of my middle names, is an honoring name. Craig was my mom’s brother’s name who died when he was 9 years old, so I never met him. If I had been a boy, either my first or middle name would have been Craig. I think because my mom never had a son it would make her really happy if I used the middle name Craig.

Jackson Alexander- Jackson is such an adorable handsome name, and I've just been loving it lately. It’s really cool to me, and I just love the nickname Jacks. I would use the nickname Will with William, and the nicknames Will and Jacks are just so cute together to me J. ! Alexander is a take on my older sister Alexandra’s name. Allie is one of my favorite people in the world, and she has always been there for me.

Henry John- This is a name that has always been on and off of my lists, and now it is solidly sitting at number 3. Henry to me is just classy and wonderful and no matter how popular it gets I will always love it (clearly with William and Jackson as my top names, I don’t give a crap about popularity). John is a name that has a lot of significance to me. John is the name of a swim coach who always believed in me, the name of a boy with autism who taught me how even if someone is different they are still important, that in a way I can speak a different language and led me to find a passion for helping, and Jon is my dad’s middle name.

And now the ladies…

Evelyn Ruth- I was going through my closet and I found this old weird folder on one of my shelves and decided to go through it. Turns out it was a bunch of old stuff of my moms, like pictures and letters, and even her baptismal record; on this record was my grandma’s full name, which turned out to be Ruth Evelyn. I’ve always been planning on honoring my granny my using her first name Ruth as a middle name, but then I heard this combo. I was so ecstatic because the combo Evelyn Ruth is perfect to me. I adore the name Evelyn because it’s sweet and old fashioned and I can picture it on someone of any age. Also, these names together have an awesome meaning with Evelyn meaning “wished for child” and Ruth meaning “friend, companion”.

Charlotte Alexandra- Charlotte is another name that has been on and off of my list. I think the main reason that before now it never stuck is because my sister “claimed” it but really can somebody claim a name before a baby is conceived/born? I don’t think so. Charlotte may be popular but I don’t think that diminishes how lovely and classic it is. Alexandra is again to honor my wonderful sister J

Nora May- Nora is a short and sweet name that I have always loved. I remember in 7th grade that I wanted to name my daughter Norah Catherine. Now, I don’t like the H spelling as much as the without an H spelling; I like how streamlined Nora looks. May is to honor my mom, who was born in the month of May. I decided to use May instead of her name, because I REALLY dislike her name (it’s Karen).

So those are them, my top names William, Jackson, Henry, Evelyn, Charlotte and Nora J

Not On My List

Hey ladies! Sorry for the delayed post.. I got called into work last night and I'm working an 18 hour day today. Anyways back to the blog .. Today I've picked one boy name and one girl name that I really like but don't have it on my list of favourite names.

Girl ~ Ruby

I think Ruby with the nickname Rue is so adorable! However my cousins have a dog named Ruby and I know my cousin on my other side of the family reeeeally wants to name his future daughter Ruby!

If I had Ruby on my favourites list I would probably have the combo be ~ Ruby Genevieve.

WDYT of the combo Ruby Genevieve?
Is Ruby on your list?
What combo do you have?

Boy ~ Luke

I think Luke is such a cute name. I don't like the full names for it (Lucas/Luca).I like how simple it is. The reason its not on my list is because I know a bunch of Luke's and also because I just don't think its a name I'd like long term.

If I had it on my favourites list I would probably have the combo be ~ Luke Everett.

WDYT of the combo Luke Everett?
Is Luke on your list?
What combo do you have?

Until next time ....

Why The Popular Names Are Popular

I was going to announce the winners of my baby name game from December 31st at the beginning of this blog but not enough people played L so everyone who played is a winner, thanks for all of your suggestions, and for playing! Maybe next time we will get more of a turnout if I do another client game!

This week for my third and last post in my popular baby name series I’m going to talk about the top ten in the United States for 2012. “What makes these names popular?” is the main question I’m going to try to answer because I think that we all have that question, though, I might not be able to answer it for all of the names because there are some that even I don’t understand J Feel free to disagree with anything I say, these are just my opinions and thoughts.

Sophia- The lovely Sophia, I adore this name, but can’t use it (I have a cousin with this name). I think that this name is popular because of wide spread appeal, it appeals so parents looking for a name that has strength, parents who want a child to have a name with a good meaning (wisdom is pretty awesome), modern parents, and old fashioned parents. This name covers all the bases.

Emma- Many people think that Emma became popular because of Friends but that is not the case, it was already rising when Rachel stole this lovely name from Monica; though I’m sure that Friends did help it rise faster. The main reason I think Emma became popular was because it was an alternative to megastar Emily.

Isabella- This is another name that people think became popular because of a popculture phenomenon (Twilight) but Isabella was already number 1 when the first movie came out and in the top 20 when the first book did. I think Isabella was the starter to the trend of long and frilly names for girls, with cute little nicknames. This name gives parents options, a long a flowy name or a short spunky nickname (Izzy or Bella).

Olivia- Olivia has been a rising star since the 90s, and I just love this one. Olivia along with Isabella is part of the long and filly girls name trend. I think it appeals to parents because it’s long and strong, but there is also the adorable nicknames of Liv and Livi

Ava- Ava is like a counter to Olivia and Isabella. While Ava is still girly and beautiful, it’s not long and frilly, it’s simplistic, short and sweet. It has the same appeal as Olivia with the funky V sound in the middle but is much shorter, and has no nicknames.

Emily- Emily was a dominate power for YEARS, until Isabella dethroned it. I think the appeal of Emily is the old-fashioned charm, while still sounding modern. Emily is just a pretty name, it’s not harsh at all, and just sounds sweet.

Abigail- I think that Abigail has the same appeal as Emily, although some might find the B sound kind of harsh. Abigail has old fashioned appeal, while still staying a little bit modern with the lovely nickname Abby.

Mia- Mia, like Ava, is a counter to the long and frilly names that are becoming more and more popular. Mia, even though it’s popular, is like a breath of fresh air to all the long a girlie names that are getting more popular. I think that Mia has universally appealing sounds (feel free to disagree but that’s my opinion), and it’s just a cute little name.

Madison- Honestly, this name doesn’t appeal to me, but obviously it appeals to a lot of other parents. I think it might be the nickname Maddie, but I’m not sure.

Elizabeth- I ADORE the name Elizabeth, and clearly so do other parents. I think the appeal comes from the fact that it is a classic name that will never go out of style. If you hear the name Elizabeth, you don’t link it to a certain decade or area in time, which I’m sure appeals to a lot of parents.

Jacob- Jacob is a name that seems like it has been popular for forever (and it kind of has) so obviously it appeals to a lot of parents. Jacob is just a friendly name to me, you can use the adorable nickname Jake or the full Jacob and have the same ‘boy next door’ appeal.

Mason- I think Mason got a huge boost from the Kardashians, though it was already rising. No one would use this name BECAUSE of the Kardashians, but having heard it more and more means that parents were thinking of it more. This name is an occupational name without being too obvious, and I think parents like this. It’s also is a nice alternative to Jason.

Ethan- Ethan has been popular for a while too. Clearly boy’s names stick around for longer, and I think that’s because they have more overall appeal. There are a few famous people and characters named Ethan, so I think that helped it out. It’s also a softer sounding name, still strong, but not in your face masculine.

Noah- This lovely, Old Testament name is just becoming popular again. Like Ethan, it has a softer sound, while still being masculine, and I think that parents really like that in a name. It is also a nice name for parents who are looking for a biblical name but don’t want something like David or Joseph

William- This is my number one boy’s name, so obviously I see the appeal. I find William as a strong, classic, masculine name. It has the sweet nickname possibility of Will, which I find adorable. I like that William has been used for years, and will never go out of style.

Liam- Liam originated as a nickname for William but is now a standalone name. Liam is another softer but masculine name for boys. I think Liam is very very handsome, and reminds me of the great Liam Neeson. The only thing about Liam is that I don’t think it has staying power like a lot of the other names on this list.

Jayden- I don’t even know…

Michael- Michael has been popular for YEARS; it appeals to many people, in many different walks of life. I feel like Michael might still be popular because of honoring purposes (whether baby is named after Dad or Grandpa Mike) because it sounds a little bit dated to me, but is still a lovely classic choice.

Alexander- This name is similar to William to me. It’s strong and classic, with lots of nickname possibilities. There’s the friendly Alex, the modern Xander, and the cool Lex. Alexander has royal appeal (as does William), and brings to mind some of the great leaders of the past.

Aiden- Aiden is one of the leaders in the –aiden trend that I don’t quite understand. I’m a lover of popular names, but to me, even though I love the sound of Aiden, it’s just around too much for me now with all the different names that are in use now a days.

How To Choose Combos

This is how I choose combos!

  1. Look online through Names
  2. Find a name I like
  3. Find a middle name that goes nicely
  4. See if it goes nicely with my other names
  5. If so, then keep it
  6. If not, then back to step number 1!

Names for Sochi '14

As a name nerd and a Canadian hockey fan, Tuesday was a day I’d been waiting for for months. What happened Tuesday? I’ll give you a few hints: it happens only once every 4 years, it involves over 20 names to look at and it relates to hockey! If you guessed the announcement of the Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team roster, you got it! Because there are just so many names, I decided to pare it down a little. In this post, I’m going to talk about my top 3 and the 3 most interesting names on the Sochi ’14 roster.

My Favorites
Name: Corey
Rank*: 351
Meaning: unknown meaning
My Thoughts: Cory right now is one of my top girl names (which I know is not most people’s deal), but I love it on a boy too! Although Corey is the original, the less popular Cory just looks cleaner to me. I think it’s a really energetic sounding, not to popular choice!

Name: Duncan
Rank*: 835
Meaning: brown warrior
My Thoughts: Duncan is one of those names I’ve always loved, but will probably never love enough to use. Duncan basically has all those things that make a name a winner. For those who don’t love popularity, it’s pretty low ranking. For those who like common sounding names, it has a lot of the same elements as hugely popular names. It has the Shakespeare pedigree and could honor a Scottish heritage.

Name: Drew
Rank*: 282
Meaning: short form of Andrew (man of a man)
My Thoughts: Although Andrew is a cool name, I’ve always been able to get behind its two biggest nicknames (Andy being the other) way more than just Andrew itself. With Andrew being a top 20 choice, Drew is probably much more popular than its ranking would suggest, making it not a great pick for unique name lovers. If that kind of thing doesn’t bug you, Drew is definitely substantial enough to be its own name.

Most Interesting
Name: Roberto
Rank*: 308
Meaning: bright fame
My Thoughts: I promise before I began this post I did not know Roberto was more popular in the US than Corey and Duncan. I’m also gonna just chalk this one up to a difference in geography as I’ve known multiple Corey’s/Cory’s and a Duncan, but would be shocked to meet a Roberto. Anyway, I think Roberto sounds worlds more modern and interesting than just Robert and could be a cool choice for people looking to honor Italian, Spanish or Portuguese heritage.

Name: Pernell
Rank*: n/a
Meaning: unknown
My Thoughts: I try not to think about this name, which is a lot easier as the owner chooses to go by his initials (PK) and not his actual name. The best I can do for any kind of history would be the feminine name Parnel which is derived from an ancient Roman male name. I’d definitely advise against this name, but my love for PK Subban comes out in full force during the Olympics. As a member of the Montreal Canadians, I’m legally obligated to hate PK (or at least not talk about loving him as much as I do). Thankfully, during the Olympics, we all play for Canada!

Name: Shea (pro. Shay)
Rank*: n/a
Meaning: admirable
My Thoughts: I really love this name. The soft sound and Irish roots are particularly appealing to me. The only Shea I’ve ever met is a girl who uses the phonetic spelling, and although it’s a name that I can see as unisex, I’d love to meet a male Shea.

*even though these players are Canadian and were born 20-30 yrs ago, I used American ’12 rankings

So there are my favorite names and the most interesting names from this roster. I have to throw out a couple more mentions though. Matt Duchene, who grew up in my hometown, will also be repping Canada in the games. Finally, there are three boys from my Leafs who made their own Olympic teams, so here’s hoping Phil Kessel (US), James Van Riemsdyk (US) and Nikolai Kulemon (Russia) also have a fantastic Olympics too.
