Names From Tim Burton Movies!

Happy Halloween Everyone! I’m going to take this week off of the Biblical names (I did the ladies last time I blogged) because it’s Halloween, and I think that warrants a list of names that has to with this festive day. I’ll do the gentlemen of the Bible next time I blog. I’ve decided that instead of the normal “names that relate to Halloween” like names the mean black and things like that, I’m going to talk about names from Tim Burton movies, because to me, those always seem awesome during the Halloween season!
A lot of names from Tim Burton movies are quite useable, so I picked the ones that I thought were most useable and the ones that I like the best J The movie and year the movie came out are listed after the name. I know usually I do a description with each name and give you my thoughts but this week has been crazy, so I just do not have any time! I promise that I will do better next time!
Let’s get started with the ladies….

Emily (Corpse Bride- 2005)
Juno (Beetlejuice- 1988)
Katrina (Sleepy Hallow- 1999)
Lydia (Beetlejuice-1988)
Sally (Nightmare before Christmas- 1993)
Selina (Batman Returns-1992)

Adam (Beetlejuice- 1988)
Barnabas (Dark Shadows- 2012)
Edward (Edward Scissorhands- 1990)
Jack (Nightmare Before Christmas- 1993)
Max (Batman Returns- 1992)

Victor (Corpse Bride- 2005)

Name of the Week! World Series Style!

This week's name of the week is....

Hi everyone it's Gabby! I'm in a World Series fever! Boston Red Sox vs. St. Louis Cardinals Game 6! I would do a Halloween themed name but I'm pretty sure Grace will post something about Halloween tomorrow!

Gender: Boy
Origin: English
Meaning: 'from St. Botolf's Stone'
Rank: 538
Other names that go well with Boston: Scarlett, Valeria, Josie, Jude, Noah, Asher
My opinion: I love this name, though with a personal bias since I live in the state where Boston is the capital and I'm a huge Boston Red Sox fan.  I would deem it unusable for any Massachusetts resident.
YOUR opinion: leave it in the comments!!!

Ladies of the Bible

Happy Thursday Everyone! Today I am going to talk about Biblical names! Biblical names have always been popular, with good reason; most are beautiful and solid classic names! I’ll put the rank in the United States as of 2012. On with the names, I think we’ll talk about the wonderful women of the Bible, next time a blog, the men!

1.      Abigail (#7): This beautiful name from the Old Testament is popular for a reason. Abigail is beautiful and classic, with the lovely nickname Abby or even maybe Gail if parents want something a little bit different (though as much as I love Gail, I think I’m in the minority). Having been in the top 10 for 12 years, Abigail isn’t exactly a creative choice, but it is beautiful.
2.      Eden (#164): This beautiful Biblical place name has been rising since it entered the top 1000 in 1986. Eden brings to mind pictures of paradise and beauty in my mind, probably because of the place, but also because of the sound of this name. With the adorable nickname Edie, this name could work on any age.
3.      Elizabeth (#10): Elizabeth is the premiere classic name, having never left the top 30 (slipping to 26 in 1945). Elizabeth is long and beautiful, with many different nickname choices. Currently, Elizabeth is my number one name (funny, last time I wrote a post, I had a different top girl name, shows how consistent I am). I love that Elizabeth has so many great namesakes, and if you hear it, you don’t know how old the girl behind the name is going to be.
4.      Eve (#558): The name of the first woman in Biblical history, this name is short, sweet, and beautiful. While Eve might have some negative connotations because she was tempted by the serpent in the Garden of Eden, I still think Eve is beautiful. The nickname Evie is also adorable
5.      Hannah (#22): This lovely palindrome name, ranking pretty high in the top 100 is beautiful and classic. Hannah, mother of Samuel, was a great woman of faith, and I’ve always loved her story for some reason. Hannah is a wholesome name, with lots of history.
6.      Leah (#33): Another popular name, Leah is both beautiful and strong. An Old Testament name, Leah is full of history. I love the sweet and classic sound to Leah. Leah, who was the sister of Rachel and wife of Jacob in the bible, is a name that could fit a girl/woman of any age.
7.      Mary (#123): Mary. What can you say about the complete classic Mary? We call know one, and she was on top for hundreds of years, finally being dethroned by Linda in 1947. Many may say that Mary is boring, and overused, but personally I love it. Currently my number 2 name, Mary screams class and beauty to me. Mary I think might be the most well-known women in the bible and might be the most well-known name, but she is still wonderful.
8.      Miriam (#314): Miriam was the sister of Moses, and a prophetess in the Old Testament. Miriam is a wonderful name, with connections to the above Mary, this classic name could be perfect for honoring a Mary. I personally love the nickname Miri, and the full name Miriam.
9.      Ruth (#344): Ruth has such a lovely story in the Bible that makes it hard not to love this name. I’m not going to go into the entire story of Ruth (or actually Book of Ruth) but seriously, if you’re curious, go GoogleJ. This is my Granny’s name, and it will be the middle name of one of my future daughters if I do have one. I love how classic and short the name Ruth is too, it’s starting to feel fresh again to me
10.  Sarah (#43): Once a top 10 name, Sarah is starting to fall in popularity, but not in beauty. Sarah, who was the wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac, is a beautiful and classic name. It also boasts the spelling of Sara, which is at #143, and this might make the name Sarah a little confusing. No matter what the popularity is, I still think Sarah is gorgeous.

my favorite popular names

For my last post, I talked about my favorite names that did not make the SSA top 1000 list. This week, I thought I’d go in the opposite direction and discuss my favorite names in the SSA top 100. As someone who’s never shied away from popular names, I had a really hard time narrowing this list down!

Girls

Name: Abigail
Rank: 7
Meaning: my father is joy
My Thoughts: Abigail is pretty universally popular, ranking in the top 100 in Canada, Northern Ireland, The US, Australia and The UK. It comes from Hebrew and was used in the Bible. Abigail is the epitome of a classic and has the adorable nickname option of Abbey. For namers who don’t shy away from popularity, Abigail is a gorgeous choice.

Name: Lily
Rank: 16
Meaning: lily flower
My Thoughts: Lily has been one of my all time favorite names. It’s so feminine and delicate and I love how it evokes images of fields of flowers. Lately, I’ve been loving the association of the character Lily on How I Met Your Mother as well. Lily has many lovely long forms for those who like it, but not its popularity or nickname-y feel, of those, my favorite is Liliana.

Name: Zoë
Rank: 20
Meaning:  life
My Thoughts: Zoë is derived from Greek. Between its meaning and spunky first Z, Zoë has a super youthful and vivacious sound to me. Zoë is short and sweet and would be a great choice for those looking for a super vibrant name. Also, despite it having a high popularity, I definitely don’t feel as if I know very many!

Name: Claire
Rank: 45
Meaning:  clear, bright and famouse
My Thoughts: Claire is the French form of the English, Clara. Claire is my nana’s name and one of my middles and is a name I’ve always adored. I think that despite its one syllable length, Claire is very elegant and feminine.

Name: Caroline
Rank: 80
Meaning:  warrior
My Thoughts: Caroline is so classy. Caroline is the name of a princess and was the name of a character in Pride and Prejudice. Caroline has French roots and has many international variants. Those who love the sound of Caroline, but not the popularity could go with an international version such as Karolina or Carlotta.

Boys

Name: Nathan
Rank: 29
Meaning:  he gave
My Thoughts: Nathan ranks high in many countries and is actually number one in France! Nathan is a Biblical name as well. To me, Nathan is ultra masculine and strong, but still delicate and charming. I adore both Nate and Tate as nickname options. The related Nathaniel is just slightly less popular with all the same charm.

Name: Isaac
Rank: 30
Meaning:  he laughs
My Thoughts: Isaac is a Biblical name with a gorgeous meaning. Isaac has been very common among Jewish families and is a family name for me. In its more original Hebrew form Yitzhak, Isaac has been seen on two recent Israeli Prime Ministers.

Name: Hunter
Rank: 45
Meaning:  one who is a hunter
My Thoughts: Hunter is one of my all time favorite names! To me, this name is super masculine and a name I could totally see on a little hockey playing rough and tumble boys boy and I love that! Hunter is super popular in Canada, The US and Australia, but would be a more unusual choice in the UK.

Name: Jordan
Rank: 48
Meaning:  descends
My Thoughts: Jordan comes from the name of the river between Israel and Jordan. This name is a recent name crush for me. Jordan peaked in popularity in the 90’s and as a result I would probably need both hands to count the number of Jordans I know. This and its usage on girls of late kind of put me off, which is too bad as I think it’s a really lovely sounding name and Jordy is an adorable nickname. For those who like the idea of Jordan on a girl but are not unisex name kind of people, Jordana is a gorgeous and exotic feminine version.

Name: Levi
Rank: 55
Meaning:  attached
My Thoughts: Levi is a name that bounces on and off my lists. Levi is another Biblical name. Levi is popular in the Scandinavian countries as well as the US, Canada and Australia. I love the sound of Levi and how classically masculine it is. That said, I do find the jean brand association a little off putting.

So those are my favorites from the SSA top 100. What are your favorite popular names and where do you weigh in on the popularity divide?
