-------------------

Hello everyone! My name is Gabby and I feel honored to be a guest blogger! If you followed me on Formspring (@LunaScarlett) or watch my Youtube videos (hpfreak54) you know that I’m the BIGGEST Harry Potter fan ever.  So I’m gonna list my top 15 names for each gender from the series.  I will give background info on the first 10 but underneath will be the final five with just the meaning and origin. Here we go! DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!

We are going to start with girls!
  1. Luna-Latin-moon-#2 name.  I’ve always loved the name Luna but the character Luna Lovegood in the series just made me love it so much more.  She’s the eccentric daughter of Quibbler editor Xenophilius Lovegood.  Her mother is deceased after an experiment with spells went wrong.  She goes on to marry Rolf Scamander and have twin sons. Luna Lovegood is portrayed by Evanna Lynch.
  2. Bellatrix-Latin-warlike-#9 name.  Clearly I got this name from Bellatrix Lestrange née Black who is the PSYCHO sister of Narcissa Malfoy and Andromeda Tonks.  She’s Lord Voldemort second in command and is a ruthless killing machine.  She’s famous for driving Neville Longbottom’s parents to insanity and killing her own niece, Nymphadora Tonks.  She was married to Rodolphus Lestrange and was killed by Molly Weasley.  Bellatrix Lestrange is portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter.
  3. Narcissa-Greek-numbness-#1 Guilty Pleasure name.  Narcissa is Bellatrix Lestrange and Andromeda Tonks’s sister, Draco Malfoy’s mother and Lucius Malfoy’s wife.  Though she never claimed to be a Death Eater, follower of Lord Voldemort, and never bore the Dark Mark, she believed in Pureblood supremacy.  Narcissa never killed or tortured anyone.  Narcissa Malfoy is portrayed by Helen McCrory.
  4. Andromeda-Greek-ruler of men-#3 Guilty Pleasure name.  Andromeda Tonks is Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy’s sister, Ted Tonks’s wife and Nymphadora Lupin née Tonks’s mother.  She was disowned from her family because she married a Muggle, something the Black family (the family she’s a part of) looked down upon.  Her scenes were filmed but never appeared in the final theatrical cut.  Andromeda Tonks is portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter.
  5. Alecto-Greek-unceasing. Alecto Carrow was Amycus Carrow’s twin (possibly, I forget) sister.  Alecto was a Death Eater and a teacher of Muggle Studies when Severus Snape was headmaster. She, along with her brother, never fought in the Battle of Hogwarts since they were kept captive in the Ravenclaw Tower.  Her fate is unknown but she most likely was sent to Azkaban, wizard prison.  Alecto Carrow is portrayed by Suzie Toase.
  6. Hermione-Greek-pillar queen-#18 name.  I know many people don’t like this name, especially my boyfriend, but I love this name despite the fact i can’t stand Hermione Granger.  Hermione is a Muggle-born witch and is Harry and Ron’s best friend.  Hermione goes on to marry Ron Weasley and have a daughter and a son.  Hermione Granger is portrayed by Emma Watson..
  7. Lysandra-Greek-one who is freed.  Lysandra Yaxley née Black is Arthur Weasley’s maternal grandmother.  Not much is known about Lysandra except that she is a pureblood witch and was married to Arcturus Black II.  I ADORE the name Lysandra and its male counterpart Lysander.  I think it’s a very fresh name and a great HP name since it isn’t apparent that is a name from this iconic series.
  8. Lavender-English--the purple flowering plant. Lavender Brown is an annoying Gryffindor student who begins a relationship with Ron Weasley in their sixth year.  She is later critically injured/dead (it was never specified) in her seventh year during the Battle of Hogwarts by werewolf Fenrir Greyback  I love the name Lavender even though the character really isn’t the best association.  Lavender Brown is portrayed by Jessie Cave.
  9. Cassiopeia--Greek --clever. Cassiopeia Black wasn’t really mentioned much in the series but appears on the Black family tapestry in the Order of the Phoenix film.  She is Sirius Black’s grandaunt.  It’s on my Guilty Pleasure list of girls and I think this name is a great alternative to the uber popular Cassandra and Cassidy.
  10. Fleur--French--flower. Fleur Delacour was a student the French wizarding academy Beauxbatons and was a contestant in the Triwizard Tournament.  Her sister’s name is Gabrielle, her mother’s is Apolline but her father’s was never mentioned.  She later marries Bill Weasley and has 3 children.  Fleur is a recent addition to my favorites list and a great one syllable name!  Fleur Delacour is portrayed by Clemence Poesy.
Numbers 11-15: Helena--Greek--light. Ginevra--Italian--fair one. Rowena--English--fame joy--#7 favorite name.  Victoire--French--victory. Aurora--Latin--goddess of the dawn--#1 name

Here are the boys!
  1. Draco-Italian name-dragon-#4 name.  Draco Malfoy is the son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy and is a student in Slytherin.  He’s the bully of the school with the help of his acquaintances Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, Pansy Parkinson, and Blaise Zabini.  There’s much deeper meaning to the character that is only shown if you read the books (unless you very good at catching on to the abuse in the movies), which is why Draco is my all time favorite male character.  Draco is such a badass name.  Draco Malfoy is portrayed by Tom Felton.
  2. Lucius-Latin-light-#5 name.  Lucius Malfoy is the husband of Narcissa Malfoy and the father of Draco Malfoy.  Lucius is a rich man  who basically buys his way through everything.  He abuses Draco into being like him.  He’s a complete asshole who is also a coward but I love him for some reason! No not just because I pictured him as a hottie when I read the books.  Lucius is quite a sexy name you have to admit!  Lucius Malfoy is portrayed by Jason Isaacs.
  3. Sirius-Greek-dog star-#8 name.  Sirius Black was Harry’s godfather.  He was sent to Azkaban for basically being at the wrong place at the wrong time.  He’s a loyal and loving man to Harry.  He was killed by his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange in the Battle of the Ministry.  He is the reason I love this name.  Sirius Black is portrayed by Gary Oldman.
  4. Kingsley-English-from the king’s field.  Kingsley Shacklebolt was a member of the Order of the Phoenix and was employed as an Auror of the Ministry.  After the Battle of Hogwarts, he was an Acting Minister for Magic.  For those who’ve read the books and watch the movies, Kingsley Shacklebolt is such a suave guy.  Kingsley is such a slick and cool name in my opinion even though it ends in -ley which is quite feminine.  Kingsley Shacklebolt is portrayed by George Harris.
  5. Abraxas-Greek-mystical word-#3 favorite Guilty Pleasure name.  Abraxas Malfoy is Lucius Malfoy’s father.  Not much is known about him except the fact he died by dragon pox.  I think the “x” in it makes this name so unique.  I feel like the Malfoy family and Black family names are the coolest.
  6. Hugo-German-bright in mind and spirit.  Hugo Weasley is the son of Ron and Hermione and their youngest child.  Again not much is known about him since he only appears in one chapter of the WHOLE series.  Hugo fits in with the ends in “o” trend that’s beginning and is a fresh replacement of Hugh.  Hugo Weasley is portrayed by Ryan Turner.
  7. Marvolo-Latin-ill will.  Marvolo Gaunt is the maternal grandfather of Tom Marvolo Riddle aka Lord Voldemort.  He, like the majority of the Gaunt family, is a Parselmouth, a person who has the ability to speak to snakes.  Not much is known about Marvolo except that he was a very bad man.  Yes there’s a terrible association with this name but it’s so cool, the main reason I love Harry Potter names.
  8. Hyperion-Greek-the one above.  Hyperion is Draco Malfoy’s son’s middle name, Scorpius Hyperion.  He’s mentioned in the Epilogue of Deathly Hallows and that’s it.  Hyperion is a very cool mythological name since it’s the name of one of the 12 Titans in Greek mythology.  Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy is portrayed Bertie Gilbert.
  9. Fenrir-Norse Mythology--fen-dweller.  Fenrir Greyback is the most ferocious werewolf mentioned in the series.  He created Remus Lupin’s lycan side and killed countless children.  Again, like Marvolo, it has a terrible association but it is such an interesting name.  The name is pronounced fen-rear. Fenrir Greyback is portrayed by Dave Legeno.
  10. Cedric-English-kindly and loved.  Cedric Diggory was a Hufflepuff student who competed in the Triwizard Tournament alongside Fleur Delacour, Harry, and Viktor Krum.  Contrary to popular belief, Voldemort ordered Peter Pettigrew to kill him, Voldemort didn’t kill Cedric Diggory.  In the movies, Cedric Diggory is portrayed by Robert Pattinson (yes the guy who plays Edward Cullen).
Number 11-15:  Remus--Latin--no found meaning.  Firenze--Italian--name for Florence.  Rabastan--Arabic--head of the serpent. Severus--Latin--stern or severe.   Antonin--unknown origin --stubborn or resistant
