New Names I Am LOVING!

Hey everyone!
I am home from Florida and as red as a lobster (and in a whole lot of pain...)! This week, while relaxing, I began to re-think some of the names in my top 10.
As of last week, my top 10 were:
Lia, Sarah, Hannah, Alison & Rylee
Nicholas, Daniel, Aidan, Andrew & Colin.
My #4 & 5 for girls and #5 for boys are constantly changing, and I think this is the time they will change again. Alison has been in the #4 / 5 spot for 4 weeks, Rylee for 6 weeks and Colin was at #5 for 7 weeks.
This week, I have replaced 2 of those names.
My #5 for girls is now Caroline, replacing Alison (although they are basically tied, but I can only pick 1 for #5, and I needed a change), and #5 for boys is now Greyson, replacing Colin.

Caroline-
I never used to like Caroline because of a really mean girl I know. Recently, I saw the name "Araline" in a school book and thought "Hmm... that sounds a lot like Caroline". I began to think more and more about the name Caroline and decided to add it to my list in November 2012 for the first time ever. It has always been filed away as a name I would never consider because of the girl I know, but now I am loving it so much. Caroline ranked #87 in 2011, so it is kind of popular, but not too much so. My favorite part of this name is all of the nicknames you can get away with! Cara, Carol, Carly, Ara, Carrie, and the list goes on! I would most likely use Carly or Cara, because I love those names alone as well.

-Other girls names I am loving: Macey, Mackenzie, Marissa, Vanessa, Norah, Mariah, Mia, Adelie, Delaney, Reese

Greyson-
First of all, I love -son names, and I am guilty of liking some of them on girls as well....including this one. I'm sorry, but Gracen (the spelling I like best) on a girl is absolutely adorable, and you can still use the nickname Gracie! On a boy, you can use Grey (or Gray, depending on how you spell it). I prefer the Grey spelling the best because it looks so much more masculine. Grey as a nickname sounds tough and strong. I have had Greyson on my list for a while, but never really paid much attention to it until a couple weeks ago. I decided to replace Colin because it is the middle name for my #4 (Andrew). I didn't like having Colin in 2 spots, so I thought "hey, what a perfect opportunity to add Greyson to the list!" And thus, Greyson became my #5 name.

-Other boys names I am loving: Cooper, Caleb, Camden, Tanner, Parker

I hope everyone has a great week!
Let me know what names you are all liking!

some of my friends

Hey all! In honor of it being my final week of second year, I thought I’d talk about the names of some friends I’ve made or grown close to this year.

Name: Annie
Rank (In Canada): n/a
Meaning: Diminutive of Anne or Anna (Anna ranks 47th in Canada)
My Thoughts: Until recently, I’d assumed Annie was a nickname. After learning that it’s not, we’ve taken to occasionally calling her Annabel, which completely fits. I think Annie is so adorable, but would never use it as a full name. Anna and Annabel (that spelling only) are my favorite Ann- names.

Name: Sarah
Rank (In Canada): 17
Meaning: Lady or Princess
My Thoughts: Sarah is one of those names I want to love, but can’t. I think part of it is that it’s been done to death in my age group. Both Sarah and Sara were top 50 names in ’93 and I just find it boring now. My friend Sarah is a fab association thought, she’s so stunning and a lovely person.

Name: Henrietta
Rank (In Canada): n/a
Meaning: Feminine diminutive of Henry, meaning home ruler.
My Thoughts: I think Henrietta is pretty cool, but it’s not something I’d ever use. I do adore Henry for a boy and all the nickname options in Henrietta. Hattie is my favorite.

Name: Alexander
Rank (In Canada): 25//77
Meaning: Defending men
My Thoughts: To me, Alexander is a pretty fab name. Its 25 spot and the fact that Alex is in 77 make prove that others agree with me too. It’s so strong and masculine and cool, but still a total classic. I also adore the nicknames Alex and Sasha. I may or may not have a huge crush on my Alex, which is making me love his name even more!

Name: Joseph
Rank (In Canada): 71
Meaning: He will add
My Thoughts: Joseph isn’t a name I’d really ever thought about much. I actually had no idea it was so popular in Canada. It’s very masculine and classic, which I love. To me, it’s one of those names that fits a lot of categories, it’s Biblical, but also common. The Joe I know is also incredibly funny, so that’s a good association.

Woo! Don’t get me wrong, I love school, but it’s GREAT to be almost done. And halfway through my BA! Crazy! Hope you all finish up school well. And if not in school, hope you get to summer well too :)

Where Were We 1 Year Ago?

Hey guys!
This week I decided to look back at my old favorite names from this time last year.
A few of them are the same, but some are VERY different.
On my listography (https://listography.com/0092025326), I list my top 10 names every Thursday, and on the last Thursday of the month, I figure out which names I like for the most week and put together my top 10 for that month.
For today's post, I will be looking at my top 10 from March 2012, and my top 10 from March 2013 (April isn't over yet!).
Enjoy!
March 2012
March 2013
Lia Rose
Lia Rose
Lily Josephine
Sarah Jane
Aliana Rose
Hannah Rae
Mia Rose
Alison Lindsey
Aubree Ella
Rylee Annabelle
Nicholas Anthony
Nicholas Anthony
Daniel Scott
Daniel Scott
Aidan Joseph
Aidan Joseph
Noah Landon
Andrew Colin
Ryan Joseph
Colin Richard

Thoughts on the 2012 list --> Overall, I still love all of these names. I don't like how I had Rose as a middle name for 3 out of 5 of my girls names! What was I thinking? That is crazy. And I had Joseph for 2 of the boys! Most of the first names would still be in my top 20, that is, if I actually had a top 20 lol. Its hard for me to even have a top 5 sometimes!

Comparing the 2 lists, I see a lot of similarities.

  • #1 for girls hasn't changed
  • My #2 names for girls both have J middle names
  • #3s for girls both have the "anna" sound
  • #3s for girls have R middles
  • Both #5 names for girls are trendy and end in -ee.
  • Middle names for #5 girls have "elle" in them
  • I have an Ali- name on both girls lists
  • #1, 2 & 3 for boys hasn't changed
  • On both lists, #4 & 5 have 4 syllables
  • #4 middles for boys don't have any significance for me
  • #5 first names don't have any significance for me

I hope you all enjoyed today's post!
Let me know which list you like more!
Have a great week!

Outside my Comfort Zone

Naming OCD. Most other namers I talk to have naming OCD in some form or another. Some of the more common manifestations come in length (either visual length or syllables), sounds and meanings. Quite sadly, I have delve into all these variations of the same problem which puts some names that I absolutely adore way out of my comfort zone. Today’s blog post is going to be on some of those names

Boys

Name: Nathaniel
Rank (In Canada): 64
Meaning: God has given
Why I Simply Can’t Use It: As you might have noticed, my sibsets are composed of only 2 syllable first names. Although I do slightly prefer the sound and feel of Nathaniel to that of its little brother Nathan, it just stressed me out to much to have it on my list. At one point I tried to counterbalance it with Claire, hoping that having one be too long and the other too short would balance it out. But no dice.

Name: Riley
Rank (In Canada): 30
Meaning: Derived from a place name meaning rye clearing
Why I Simply Can’t Use It: I have a severe issue when two names in a set start with the same letter. I’ve had Riley bounce on and off my list depending on whether or not I have Ruby as a first or a middle. Lately I’ve been loving Ruby more and more as a first, so I’ve had to put Riley back on the shelf.

Name: Kieran
Rank (In Canada): n/a
Meaning: Black
Why I Simply Can’t Use It: Here I must admit to a bit of hypocrisy. Popularity! I like to say that the popularity of a name doesn’t matter to me, but I guess it kind of does. Currently, all six first names in my top combos (Ruby, Anna, Piper, Nathan, Hunter and Caleb) are in Canada’s 100 most popular names. To me, it’s just really weird to have some very popular names in a set next to some unranked ones. When I say popularity doesn’t matter to me, I guess I mean I love names that are both popular and unpopular, just not together. An unpopular sibset I could adore would be Kieran, Tanner, Arden and Hazel.

Girls

Name: Brenna
Rank (In Canada): n/a
Meaning: Sorrow
Why I Simply Can’t Use It: Although I usually don’t have the same kind of problem with endings as I do with beginnings, Brenna is just too similar to another name on my favorites list; Anna. I feel like Anna just suits me more, but I do love both.

Name: Celia
Rank (In Canada): n/a
Meaning: From the Latin for heaven
Why I Simply Can’t Use It: This goes back to my issues in syllable count. I’ve always found Celia to be so light and gorgeous, but it just doesn’t work for me!

Name: Hazel
Rank (In Canada): n/a
Meaning: a nature and color name
Why I Simply Can’t Use It: Hazel gives me so much grief when it comes to theme-y ness. I adore Ruby and many nature names and rarely is there a time when my list lacks another plant or color. I know that this would barely register with non namers, but it bothers me so much.

Are there any names that you would use if not for some naming OCD? Or do you think I’m completely crazy? Leave a comment either way :)

Caitlyn's Post

Happy Friday everyone!  Sorry for this post being posted so late but hope you enjoy Caitlyn's guest post! :)  PS if you want to guest blog, email babynamebloggers@gmail.com!
---------------------------------------------------

Hi all! I’m Caitlyn, AKA Ninja Robot, from Formspring and Yahoo Answers. I’ve been interested in baby names ever since I was little, so I’m really excited about being able to guest post here!

It’s no secret that I love mythological names. While I’m generally not that fussed about the meanings of names, I do love learning about their origins. And since origins are a major part of mythological names, that could be a contributor as to why I like them so much.

Some of my favourite mythological names are:

Female:
Andromeda (Greek - daughter of Cassiopeia)
Artemis (Greek - goddess of the hunt)
Avalon (Celtic - island of the dead)
Circe (Greek - goddess of magic)
Daphne (Greek - water nymph)
Echo (Greek - mountain nymph)
Freya (Norse - goddess of love and war)
Guinevere (Celtic - King Arthur’s wife)
Juno (Roman - goddess of marriage and childbirth)
Luna (Roman - goddess of the moon)
Morgana (Celtic - alternate name of the sorceress Morgan le Fay)
Morrigan (Celtic - goddess of death)
Nimue (Celtic - sorceress and seductress, sometimes the Lady of the Lake)
Pandora (Greek - the first woman)
Phoebe (Greek - titan and moon goddess)
Selene (Greek - goddess of the moon)

Male:
Achilles (Greek - greatest warrior and demigod)
Ares (Greek - god of war)
Draco (Roman - dragon killed by Minerva)
Eros (Greek - god of love)
Frey (Norse - god of fertility and prosperity)
Griffin (Greek - creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion)
Hades (Greek - king of the underworld)
Helios (Greek - god of the sun)
Loki (Norse - trickster and god of mischief)
Mordred (Celtic - King Arthur’s illegitimate son and traitor)
Orion (Greek - giant huntsman)
Osiris (Egyptian - god of the afterlife)
Phoenix (Greek - firebird that is reborn from its ashes)
Thor (Norse - god of thunder)

Names from mythology often have a distinct beauty to them, and often sound quite mystical. But I would always be hesitant to actually use them. I imagine it would be quite difficult to drop their associations, and a lot of them would be quite hard to live up to - could you imagine trying to live up to the name of a goddess or god? But it would probably be even worse with names of antagonistic figures, like Loki and Mordred. And then there are some names, that while the associations aren’t too obvious, the names themselves are extremely out-there, and might cause difficulties in schools and such.

But even with those issues surrounding them, I still find mythological names beautiful and fascinating. So what are everyone else’s favourite names from mythology? And are there any you’d be game to actually use?

Thanks for reading, and I hope this was enjoyable!
